Rubisco
So, yaa, about that blog thing. I have been a bit negligent lately and owe all my devout fans a big “APOLOGY” !! (sorry mom :(
What you ask? What kept me so busy and distracted that I stopped my hourly checkup on drudge and my daily circuit of blogs?

Simple. RUBISCO. Or as it is call by scientific journals around the globe, ribulose-1,5-bisphosphate carboxylase / oxygenase. To let you feel a more intimate bond (pun: ha, ha) with this molecule, a picture is posted.
The Green ball represents an Mg++ ion and is the reaction center of this molecule. The round balls around it are the substrates (stuff used to make stuff) and the "pipe screen saver" structure behind the green ball is rubisco. This is a super close-up shot of the protein—the equivalent of staring deep into someone’s eyes (more like mouth but gag me).
I have been working on a paper describing the function and structure of this protein. Since I turned it in today, I am free to spend my time in productive manners.
ANNOUNCMENT: my first blog poll and contest:
Poll: Would you honestly like to see more shots of rubisco?
Contest: What does rubisco do?
Catch: For your contest entry to be valid, you must answer both the poll and contest.
There will be prizes for:
First Correct Answer

Good Luck!!

What is the prize? I am a bit skeptical. I don't get myself into things without knowing the full details.

The prizes are winner dependent.
I have decided that the prize for the correct answer will be fame and a hyperlink to a website--likly Google or FireFox download. The others will be worth ~$2.00 plus shipping or priceless photos.
Good Luck!!!
Heck yes I want more pictures!
Ribulose-1,5-bisphosphate carboxylase (rubisco) is used in plants to absorb Carbon Dioxide and introduce it back into the food chain. In essence it is the starting point of the food chain.
More pictures would make my life so much better.... Actually, yeah, I think that would be sweet.
As to what rubisco does, well, you probably won't believe me. There are some things that the average person like you wouldn't know. You see, rubisco is of ancient Mayan Indian tradition. It was originally used by the tribal leaders to clean the hides of the animals that they killed because the chemical properties were such that it did an excellent job. However, the FDA has outlawed the use of rubisco and made it a felony to possess the substance because it has been proven to produce a third arm on any child that is born within 3 miles of its presence. No wonder the Mayans aren't around any more. Even though it is illegal, this rubisco is still legendary in circles of tanners and hunters who have seen, albiet to the downfall of their children, work in amazing ways to make the hides of the animals they have taken in the great hunt so beautiful that one can hardly believe that for years that hide was out running around in a woods for years.
Now please, don't go sharing this with anyone... you've got to be careful who you let in on this secret...
Rubisco is a phrase derived from Inner City Chicago. To understand the terminology, one must know a bit of history about a specific section of Inner City Chicago and also be able to break this word down into parts.
In the 1960s, when the hippy revolution was just in it's infant stages, a giant influx of ebonics and phrases being shortened into phrases was beginning to take place as well.
The evenings in this specific section of Chicago were extremely bitter cold, especially in the winter. Groups of kids would stand in circles rubbing each other's hands in an attempt to keep warm.
Now, to understand this terminology, the word must be broken down.
Rub-is-co
This word, translated directly from Inner City Chicago lingo, translates into "Rub, it's cold."
This contest will end at 11:59 pm Sunday, September 25, 2005. Great imaginations, you guys rock!!
